I’m over the moon to have been asked to work slinging gin in the back room at the NOLA Spirits Competition, which means a trip out to New Orleans in July.
I say gin slinging like it’s easy, but it takes a lot of knowledge and understanding of the the gins to set up the entries in the best way possible.
This is a brand new competition and is presented by Tales of the Cocktail Foundation. Tales is legendary in the drinks industry and runs the Tales of the Cocktail event in New Orleans over a week in July. The NOLA Spirits Competition has been organised the run the week before.
Being the first year, I’ve yet to see how it runs and what makes it different from other competitions. Every has something, be it the type of judges they recruit, the scoring system, what they focus on and what they offer entrants. Considering the association with Tales, it is likely that there is a focus on promoting spirits to the bartending community.
What I can say is that this is a fantastic opportunity to get even more experience and understanding of drinks competitions and I’m really looking forward to going.
Submissions are open until late June and are open to spirits that can be legally served in the US. You can find out more information about submitting an entry here.
I cannot wait to get out to New Orleans! The travel element of my work is such a real perk and it affords me experiences that I may well not have otherwise. I firmly believe that spending time in different places can open the mind, and contribute to perception and understanding of the world. New Orleans has been on my list for a while.
